: I'm interested in knowing the ins and outs of building in St. John. I want to find a good architect and builder that can advise me on how to build a hurrican-proof house (if that is possible). Also, any advice on which side of the island is better to build on.

: thanks,

Dear Jack,

Houses that are properly designed and built can withstand hurricane force winds. The house should also have a system of shuttering doors and windows that does not require too much labor. I can provide you with information on builders and architects and can also help you find the right piece of property. As far as which side of the island to build on, that is a matter of preference. Hurricane winds can come from any direction, depending on whether the storm passes north or south of the island. It would be best to avoid exposed ridgetops and areas where the wind is funneled into higher velocities. Feel free to e-mail us or call us at (340) 776-6862 for further information. Thanks, Curtis Johnson-Tropical Properties Real Estate
