: I used to live on St. Thomas a couple of years ago, and am planning to head down again for a visit in April 1997. Instead of staying on St. Thomas and making repeated day trips, I would like to head over to St. John for a week or so, camping and hiking the entire time. Does anyone have any information or suggestions they would share? I have heard one should not hike alone, but wasn't given any explanation. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I have done many solo hikes. What are your opinions on this matter. Are there any trails that would take me all the way around the entire island? How long would you reccommend taking? Is camping the entire way a possibility? I have just started looking into this and have many more questions. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

You can purchase a book titled "St. John Off The Beaten Track" by Gerald Singer. It has a wealth of info on numerous hiking trail along with tons of other useful things. Gerry is a local who's a great guy. This is a great book for anyone interested in finding things that are off the normal tourist trails.
