Jim: My wife and I just returned (2/28)from our second trip to St. John. Last year 1 week... this time 10 days.. next year already booked 2 weeks! We love it there.
RE: the jeep, for complete independence we like having it. They do cost $50/day with little price difference among places. From Maho, one taxi ride to Cruz Bay for 4 probably runs $14.00 + so you're looking at $28.00+ round trip. The many beaches are truly magnificient so you will want to travel around to as many as possible.
If flexibility and convenience is something that will make your vacation more enjoyable, I suggest getting the jeep. You may spend $20-$25/day more than a taxi but may find it easier on everyone.

P.S. re: the jeep. I suggest renting from Cool Breeze; Conrad Sutton or Courtesy Car Rental. AVOID O"Connor Car Rental at all costs.
